The Most Important Thing You Can Do For Your Career
The one thing that will make or break or break your career is the number of music industry people you know. Opportunities in the music industry are seldom advertised. They are relayed by word of mouth, from one friend to another.
Can you imagine what would happen if Trish Yearwood ran a "Help Wanted Backup Singer ad? Hundreds of people would call, write, email, and show up demanding auditions. How would she know who was worth listening to and who was a complete waste of time? How much would it cost to rent a large enough audition hall? What would musicians charge to play, while hundreds of want to be singers auditioned? How much would sound men and light men charge? Do you understand why she will never run a "Help Wanted Backup Singer" ad?
When Trish Yearwood or any other star has a spot to fill, they rely on word of mouth. They ask their musicians and road crew to pass the word to their friends. Instead of hundreds of people showing up to audition, only a few appear. Each of them is good. Not one of them is a waste of time.
The entire music industry works exactly this way. The more music people you know, the more music opportunities will come your way. It really is that simple. If you're serious about a career, you must get serious about meeting a lot of music people.
If your job and family ties prevent you moving to Nashville, there is still hope. Each year, there is a four day event which brings music people from around the world together. You can be seen on stage and see other singers on stage. You can talk to record producers, music publishers, booking agents, light men, sound men, and more. You can meet more music people in four days than you would anywhere else, in four years.
